Daily Late Charges Stop at All 12 Branches, While Fees for Lost or Damaged Materials Continue

ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — St. Tammany Parish Library has ended daily overdue fines throughout its 12-branch system, giving residents greater flexibility when books, DVDs, audiobooks and other qualifying materials are returned after their assigned due dates.

The parishwide policy took effect Aug. 3, 2026. Existing overdue fines will also be cleared from patron accounts, removing older daily penalties that may have discouraged some residents from using library services again.

Library officials continue to ask patrons to return borrowed materials as soon as possible. The updated policy eliminates routine late fees, but borrowers remain responsible for returning public property so other residents can access the same books, movies and educational resources.

Replacement charges may still apply when materials are lost, significantly damaged or returned without essential components. Patrons could remain financially responsible for missing discs, protective cases, inserts, maps, charging equipment or other pieces originally included with an item.

Account holders who notice a remaining balance should review the description attached to the charge. Any amount left on an account may involve replacement costs, damage fees or another obligation that is separate from an overdue fine.

The revised policy applies throughout St. Tammany Parish, including branches serving Abita Springs, Bush, Covington, Folsom, Lacombe, Madisonville, Mandeville, Pearl River and communities throughout the Slidell area.

Residents can generally return borrowed materials to any branch within the St. Tammany Parish Library system, even when the items were checked out elsewhere. Exterior book drops may offer another practical return option when buildings are closed, although patrons should confirm branch hours and available services before traveling.

Timely returns remain important because library collections are shared among communities across the parish. A title borrowed from one branch may already have a hold placed by a student, parent, teacher or reader waiting at another location.

Long return delays can extend wait times for popular novels, children’s books, school materials, test-preparation guides, DVDs and other frequently requested resources. Returning items promptly helps library staff move materials efficiently between branches and make them available to the next patron.

The previous fine schedule included daily charges for overdue books, audiobooks, compact discs and DVDs. Many St. Tammany-owned materials also carried maximum overdue penalties before the library adopted the new fine-free approach.

Patrons who find an item after it has been marked lost should contact library staff before paying a replacement charge. Staff members may be able to update the account after the material is returned, depending on its condition, circulation status and whether a replacement has already been purchased.

Borrowers should also check their accounts after placing items in an exterior book drop. Processing may not occur until the branch reopens, meaning a recently returned item could temporarily remain listed as checked out.

Why This Matters in St. Tammany

The policy affects library users throughout eastern and western St. Tammany Parish, including students, families, retirees, job seekers and residents who rely on public libraries for research, internet access, workforce assistance, educational support and entertainment.

Removing recurring overdue fines may encourage residents with older balances to reactivate their accounts and return to the library. The policy can be especially helpful for households that use several library cards or borrow multiple children’s materials at one time.

The new approach still protects the publicly funded collection by preserving charges for items that are never returned or are damaged beyond continued use. That distinction allows the library to reduce a common access barrier while maintaining accountability for materials purchased for parish residents.

Patrons can review their accounts through the library’s online catalog or speak directly with staff at any St. Tammany Parish Library branch. Library employees can assist with remaining charges, renewal limits, due dates, holds, lost-item notices and materials that continue to appear as checked out.
